Story
How it began
The project for Huk Ñan was inspired by a vision cofounder and Guardian Jeffrey received on his first solo hike up Apu Pukara Pantillijlla in Cuyo Grande. After leaving another medicine community disillusioned and lost, he knelt alone by a small river in Maska tears streaming down his face as he prayed to the Apus for help, guidance, community, protection, and ultimately a place he could call home. Immediately the town of Cuyo Grande flashed into his mind and would not leave until he made the trip to this small Quechua community up in the mountains, a place he had never visited before. Upon arrival everything quickly flowed and fell into place leading to the vision and co-creation Huk Ñan. When asked about the project Jeffrey is always quick to state his firmly held belief that Huk Ñan did not come from him but from Apu Pukara. It is a project born of the mountains and given by the Apus to bring us into alignment with our own unique paths, the world around us, and ultimately, each other.
The vision received was one of a spiritual retreat center and community dedicated to the healing and spiritual growth of all who come yet not affiliated with any one particular tradition. This project recognizes that each individual soul has its own unique path and no one path is better or worse than any other. "Huk" is a Quechua word meaning "one" "other" or in this case "unified." "Ñan" is also a Quechua word that can be defined as "path." Thus, as each soul aligns with its unique path ultimately it comes to join the "Unified Path" where our individual lives becomes unique reflections of a universal, collective truth. In keeping with this belief, Huk Ñan is a space that is open to all paths and traditions that align with the values of healing, helping, teaching, and growing towards the light, towards connectedness. We use the yamas and niyamas found in Patanjali's Sutras as a universal set of ethics and standards for our workshops, retreats, events, and gatherings. The souls who come aim to elevate our consciousness to better serve ourselves, our fellow men and women, the Earth, and the cosmos.
Vision of the FutureWhile the core foundation, structure, and ethos of the vision are fixed, the evolution and future of this project remain open to evolution, expansion, and further development. Huk Ñan is a co-creative project, calling out to seekers, visionaries, healers, artists, and teachers to not only come share their gifts and wisdom, but to also aid in the manifestation of this project.As Huk Ñan currently stands we have plans in place for the future construction of retreat and communal facilities such as an outdoor kitchen, hostel, sleeping cabins, and residential homes. We are also looking for collaborators and guest teachers who feel called to grow into more involved roles here at Huk Ñan, eventually forming a decentralized council to collectively guide and protect the vision and the project. Once Huk Ñan is self-sustainable, all proceeds from the project will go directly towards supporting the Cuyo Grande Quechua community in important humanitarian and Earth restorative initiatives, and towards the local Quechua family who provided the land for this project to take place.What else does the future hold?
